70 Days of Geocaching – Day 11

TEAM_CSGs quest to fill in month/day combinations where we have never found a geocache.

Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity, in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS)receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called “geocaches” or “caches”, anywhere in the world. (Source: Wikipedia)

A overnight snow event starting in Thursday made this one exciting.  No picture today as I forgot to take one at the find/

Cache found

When the Saints Go Marching In – a rain base with snow after a few hours made many of the sidewalks slippery.  The walk was the challenge to a older Denver neighborhood northeast of downtown. The church that is attached to the location of the cache is a condo conversion. It must be interesting to live in a former church.
I selected this cache as the size was classified as small.  I decided if I was to find a cache today, it need to be larger then a micro. When I arrived at ground zero, the find was quick and I signed the log.

Insanity – doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

A fine cup of coffee

Cuppa Chino 32 — Sun of Chicken  The snow event held off until after the lunch hour, so I went out to make my third attempt at this cache.  The cache owner took pity on me and offered a hint as to the final location.  I arrived from my office in short order, and after a bit of a search, still came up empty.  I dashed a quick email to the cache owner, asking for another hint.  This time the hint was a big whack on the side of the head.  I returned to the location, and at last had success.  With roads turning bad during the evening rush hour, I was glad to get this day marked off early.

Lesson learned – sometimes you need to trust your instinct and not the GPS.  I had searched in the area, but not enough to uncover what should have been a relatively easy find. Also, never be afraid to ask for a hint from the cache owner.

Bonus – If you go about two blocks north of the cache, you will be outside the studio of Rocky Mountain PBS.  Outside of the building, there are cement footprints of famous celebrities.

Yes, there is a giant concrete statue of a cowboy.  However, it is in a town between Lubbock and Amarillo.

Rachel’s disguise fooled no one. Art and Karen debate whether those with chronic diseases should already be gone in this world. Did Julia strike a deal with Doyle to preserve her standing? Are we now done with Julia?  Are we done with Gene?  I guess Truman was not as clueless about the disease then we thought.

Art and Karen learn that Captain Trips is a reverence to the Stephen King novel “The Stand”

Bret Michaels makes a guest appearance on the next episode.  Not very well advertised.Rachel, you fool no one.

Today was such a beautiful day, we actually found two caches on a trip to Boulder.

Caches found

View from the cache. Business is booming

Hacker Cache – After our visits to Whole Foods and Barnes and Noble, we decide to go after this cache.  A regular size cache on the far end of a parking lot it ended up taking a bit to find.  A perfect camo for the area, I became too focused on the GPS and walked by it a few times. Will need to be careful during business hours as construction trailers are parked near this cache.

Beer O’clock

Malty MICRO #11 – Another of the series places near brewpubs.  The hide was clever. We found a piece of swag left with the micro and claimed it for ourselves.  People at the outdoor patio had to wonder what we were doing there today.  Will have to go back another time and sample the local brew.

Utility work ahead – Today, the Her half of the team went caching while running errands in Broomfield, CO. As advertised, a quick park and grab, but with a small twist.  It was good that there was a hospital nearby as the many prairie dog holes could have caused a twisted ankle if you were not careful.

Oscar Nomintions for Gravity and Star Trek Into Darkness

All that was missing was Greg Evigan and Paul Riser in this episode  Did Darius Rucker have an uncredited cameo?  Charlie has had little to do in the last two episodes.  It appears Priscilla  was more then a trophy wife for Aaron. I guess we know what is now in the oranges, but does Truman Know? Will Julia be dead soon, the cost of wanting to maintain her standing?

70 Days of Geocaching – Day 7

Snake

TEAM_CSGs quest to fill in month/day combinations where we have never found a cache.

Once again, a challenging day.  I did not get started until late in the day as we were finishing recording to two podcasts.  As we were losing daylight, the team headed out.

Caches not found

Where the doggies roam…  Our first attempt on this cache.  With the sun setting, We tried this one first as the parking area is marked as being closed and locked at dusk.  From the parking area, it was a sloppy half mile walk to ground zero.  A through  look at the logical hiding area turned up nothing. The prairie dogs mocked us as we left.

Leaving Las Vegas Just In Time.  Second attempt on this one with no success.  As stated in prior posts, sometimes the ones that should be simple stump us. An additional sting as a new cacher logged it as found the same day.

Cache found

SNAKE!  It was a 2/10 mile walk from the Las Vegas cache to this one.  With a 2/2 raiting, We expected a bit of work.  At ground zero, the cache was out in the open.  We signed the logbook and the returned the cache to where we found it and covered it with the natural materials in the area.  Another day ticked off the list.

AlmostHumanyouarehere Star Wars News

This is actually the second episode filmed. per EW magazine

Self guided bullets

Art made fun of Detective Stahal this week and was appropriately smacked by Karen.  This episode had us scratching our heads over story continuity. Then we found an article that this was the second filmed episode,  after the three week hiatus, we will have episode three.  After that we should be on track. Rudy dropped hints to future episodes when talking about going undercover and sex bots.

Cuppa Chino 32 – Sun of Chicken – Second DNF on this one. The cache owner reached out to me this evening and provided a hint.  Will see if this pans out at a later date.

If you build it….cache hides will follow.  The team need a quick find tonight to continue filling in the calendar.  Walmart is always a good go-to place for that uncomplicated find. There are three in the parking area, so we have two more in reserve for the tough days.

70 Days of Geocaching – Day 5

Success at the end of the day.

A quest to complete finding one cache on every month day combination.

Play Ball #2

Cache found: bright and brown cache

This was a ‘go to’ cache in the neighborhood.  Reven the geo-dog and I traveled to this park at the end of a cul-de-sac.  Since I had found this cache once before, it was an easy find.  The logbook was in poor shape and was very difficult to sign.  We continued on our evening 2.5 mile walk.

Happy New Year for all of us at the podcast.  Was Paul the hall monitor back in elementary school?  During a rolling blackout, wouldn’t emergency services have priority on power? (We do in Denver)  Will this show evolve into the Dorian and Rudy hour?

Has the internet evolved at all, or do we still have a medium where all can hide and be snarkey.  Props to the 1910 Bubblegum company for the opening song.  As always, thanks for listening and send us your feedback.

70 Days of Geocaching – Day 4

Superman’s favorite coffee shop

Geocaching project to find a cache on every calendar date by the end of 2014.  The team is missing 70 month/day combinations.

Another lunch cache near downtown Denver. Today I had a choice of events to attend.  I could have watched the Stock Show parade, or attended a rally for the Denver Broncos Football Club, but elected to find a cache.  I always know my priorities.

Reaching ground zero was not a challenge, but finding the cache was a bitt challenge. One of the things I need to do better is trusting where my GPS places me.  I wandered, around the outside of the establishment for several minutes, but eventually returned to this cleverly “hid in plain sight’ cache.  I did patronize the coffee shop.  The brew of the day was OK, but if you can afford the calories, go for the hot chocolate.  The hide earned a favorite point from the team. Was one of teh better urban caches we have found.

70 Days of Geocaching – Day 3

Geocaching project to find a cache on every calendar date by the end of 2014.  The team is missing 70 month/day combinations.

Today presented an interesting challenge as snow developed overnight in the Denver area. By the time we got out to begin our trek, there was about four inches of snow on the ground.  Gratefully, the cachemobile has four-wheel drive, as the city had not done much plowing.  The cache is named “Between the Rainbows”, as the final location is a walkway that connects the east and west halves of Rainbow Park. We previously attempted finding this cache on 11/28/2010 without success.  I did not have much confidence that we would find it today as the last logged found was in late August 2013. The find was a lot easier this time as cleanup of the landscaping reduced the possible locations of this well hid cache.

70 Days of Geocaching – Day 2

Day 2 of the 70 days of Geocaching

Our adventure to fill in calendar dates where we have never found a cache.

I returned to work after the long Christmas break. I took the lunch hour and traveled by light rail from downtown Denver to the Broadway light rail station.  The challenge for this cache was trying to figure out how to get out of the parking lot and cross the cluster of roads where Broadway and Lincoln meet with I-25.

Once I arrived, the hiding location was fairly obvious. The guard rail is against the abandoned building, and I was able to find it quickly.  This cache also had a bonus of a Munzee , so a two for one made this trip worthwhile.
