70 Days of Geocaching – Day 51 – Jim Baker Reservoir again

TEAM_CSG’s quest to fill in month/day combinations where we have never found a geocache. Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity, in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS)receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called “geocaches” or “caches”, anywhere in the world. (Source: Wikipedia)

Jim Baker Reservoir again – It has been a brutal week weather wise in Denver.  From 70s in the start of the week to record lows of -14F, geocaching is going to get tougher for the balance of the year.    We had a break from the cold yesterday, but another front started to come through the area, and with it, another round of snow and below zero temperatures.

I had to run a few errands this morning, and took the opportunity to find the cache for this day. The hide was at Jim Baker reservoir.  The again in the name refers to the second cache at this watershed northwest of downtown Denver.  A biography of Jim Baker is here.

Ducking Out For Some Tiger Butterflies (#42) – another dash after work cache. This time a visit to Butterfly Pavilion was ground zero for this cache. The pavilion was closed when we arrived, making for a empty parking lot and a quick find.  This cache is part of a series of where rubber ducks are used as containers.

Hinge the Gates! – With the end of daylight savings time, we can expect more evening geocaching for the balance of the year. Tonight took us to ‘Moon Gulch Park’ in Arvada for this micro cache.  We were the first logged find in over two months for what was a simple find.  The only question was, Did we break park curfew?

70 Days of Geocaching – Day 48 – DPL Series: The Hitchhiker’s Guide

Not a spoiler

(Source: Wikipedia)

DPL Series: The Hitchhiker’s Guide – Our luck continues with the weather this month as I was able to take an extended walk to another in the series of Denver Public Library caches. The cache is listed as a ‘Letterbox Hybrid’. Different then the traditional cache, the container has a rubber stamp and ink pad.  The idea being you would exchange stamp impressions. This is a very small library located in the Santa Fe Arts District.  The cache is right out in the open at the front desk.  “Don’t Panic” if you do not find the logbook right away. that is part of the challenge.

Nothin’ Fancy -exactly the type of cache I needed today, quick, isolated, and near the bus stop. An Altoids tin in good shape was waiting at ground zero.   Bonus was it is on the edge of a prairie dog colony.   Them doggies is noisy.

Golden Travels – today was a travel day as we visited a few farmer’s markets in the Platteville area.  While traveling back down highway 85, we stopped in a little used rest area to pick up this small cache.

DPL Series: A Look at the Past – With another series of storms headed for the Denver area today, I attempted a cache just north of the downtown area,. Today I visited  The Blair-Caldwell Public Library, for a cache hidden in the Library.  This cache is one in a series of library-cacher partnerships in Denver.  Requirements for this cache involved exploring the museum on the second and third floors.  Amazingly, the cache is in plain sight, and no one paid attention to me.

G Clan 5 – As we approach the end of 2014, various challenges are expected as we complete our quest.  In addition to darkness coming earlier each day, we can expect less then ideal weather.  Today was no exception.  I attempted a cache downtown over lunch with no success.  Later that afternoon, waves of thunderstorms moved through the Denver area, possibly threatening the quest.  I arrived at ground zero, managing to find the cache quickly between storms.

70 Days of Geocaching – Day 43 – Transformer

Transformer –  Indian summer is upon us on the front range of Colorado, which made for a good caching day.  Sunday errands at the farmers market, coffee at Dunkin’ Donuts, and a trip to Costco, brought us to a park in Westminster.

Carroll Butts Athletic Park is an oasis in the middle of a busy urban area.  The description of this cache mentioned that the prior cache listing was once a multi-stage cache, which I found the last time I was at this park.  I was initially worried that the cache was gone as ground zero was recently painted, but we found it quickly.

vail pass parking – today brought us to the summit of Vail Pass (10,662 feet above sea level) for a ammo can.  We stopped at a truck chain-up area to make this quick find.  For us, this was the highest cache found above sea level.

70 Days of Geocaching – Day 41 – Tribute to

(Source: Wikipedia)

Tribute To –  The her half of the team was able to get away from a resort hotel in Beaver Creek. (Where I was attending a conference). to visit nearby Vail Village, Colorado.  She was able to find a virtual cache in the village, which had a simple logging requirement. “Tell me what you see?”  The picture attached to this post IS NOT what you see at the cache site, but is nearby.

What is a virtual cache? – A Virtual Cache is about discovering a location rather than a container. The requirements for logging a Virtual Cache vary—you may be required to answer a question about the location, take a picture, complete a task, etc… In any case, you must visit the coordinates before you can post your log. Although many locations are interesting, a Virtual Cache should be out of the ordinary enough to warrant logging a visit. (from Groundspeak.com)

The Falling Skies Podcast S4E9 – Till Death Do Us Part

Cochise and his View Master

Cochise and his View Master

This episode is dedicated to Paul Anka and his hit classic “Puppy Love”.  Cochise uses a View Master and says a few dirty works.  Shame on you Hal, for treating women as property.

Props to one of our listeners for identifying  a poem by Emily Dickinson as the reference to the title of last weeks episode..

“Hope” is the thing with feathers – (314)

ByEmily Dickinson 1830–1886 Emily Dickinson

“Hope” is the thing with feathers –

That perches in the soul –

And sings the tune without the words –

And never stops – at all –

And sweetest – in the Gale – is heard –

And sore must be the storm –

That could abash the little Bird

That kept so many warm –

I’ve heard it in the chillest land –

And on the strangest Sea –

Yet – never – in Extremity,

It asked a crumb – of me.
